Normal life back into gear

KATHMANDU, Sept 14:
Transport services have resumed and shops and marketplaces reopened, with the nationwide banda called by CPN-Maoist ending at 12 at noon, on Friday.



The banda that started at 6 am paralyzed normal life all across the country, including in the capital. The party called today’s half-day strike protesting recent price hike of daily essentials, including petroleum products, and pressing for the implementation of the 70-point demand put forth by the party. Transportation came to a standstill, businesses and marketplaces remained shut since early this morning due to the band. Likewise, educational institutions were closed due to the shutdown.



Earlier on Thursday, CPN-Maoist had cut short the banda duration to six hours in view of National Children’s Day and Teej festival.



JHAPA: The Nepal Banda general strike affected life in Jhapa district in the east of the country since the morning. Public transport vehicles did not operate on the East-West National Highway, the Mechi Highway and other branch roads in the district since the morning.



Meanwhile, a meeting of the Dialogue Group that was held in Birtamod of the district on Thursday agreed that the vehicles and motorcycles used in essential services would be allowed to operate without any hindrance. Similarly, it decided to allow the vehicles carrying students of schools and colleges to operate from 10 a.m. The meeting was convened with the objective of making the general strike less troublesome.



The meeting of the Dialogue Group was attended by the district representatives of different political parties, including the CPN-Maoist´s district in-charge, journalists and representatives of educational institutions.



CHITWAN: Normal life in Chitwan was affected since the morning due to the Nepal Banda general strike enforced by the CPN-Maoist today. CPN-Maoist cadres are going about in the streets enforcing the general strike.



The party cadres have gathered at Chaubiskothi in Bharatpur and at Pulchok Aanptari, Tandi Parsa and Bhandara in Narayangadh and holding demonstrations. Vehicles have stayed off the roads. The market, industries and factories remain closed.



SYANGJA: Life in major towns of the Syanga District has been hit since the morning today due to the general strike organized by the CPN-Maoist. The Nepal Banda had its impact in the district headquarters, Putali Bazaar and other towns as Waling, Galyang, Banyatari and Bayarghari.



Schools and colleges as well as public transport remained closed in the district. CPN-Maoist cadres can be seen on the streets here enforcing the banda. The District Administration Office has also mobilized security personnel to prevent any untoward incidents during the banda.



HETAUNDA: People of the Makawanpur District woke up under double bandas this morning- the Nepal Banda general strike called by the CPN-Maoist and the district-wide banda called by seven different student organizations that are calling for decreasing the price of petroleum products.



Public transport services, educational institutes, markets and factories remain closed due to the banda.
