Kathmandu regional T20 champion

KATHMANDU, Sept 24: Kathmandu district on Tuesday claimed the title of T20 Senior Regional (Kathmandu Region No 3) Selection Cricket Tournament with a thumping 62-run win over Tribhuvan University (TU) at Pulchowk ground, Lalitpur.



In the tournament conducted under single round-robin format, Kathmandu won all its four matches while Lalitpur finished second with three wins and a defeat. Bhaktapur took third place with two wins and two defeats while Nuwakot finished at the bottom with one win and three defeats.[break]



Man-of-the-match Sompal Thapa smashed an unbeaten 75 runs off 52 balls as Kathmandu posted a big total of 151/6 after winning the toss. Thapa´s innings included three sixes and five fours. Opener Niraj Bhattarai was the second-highest scorer with 18 runs while Arjun Adhikari and Suman Uday contributed 15 runs each for Kathmandu. Anil Adhikari and Sudip Sharma of TU claimed two wickets each.



Chasing the target, TU was restricted to 89/9 in 18 overs as Srijan Subedi retired hurt without batting. Amir Akhtar (19), Biplav Pokharel (18), Uttam Bhatta (14) and Prem Upreti (12) were the only TU batsmen to reach double figures. Arpan Kafle claimed four wickets while Niraj Bhattarai and Nabin Pradhan took two wickets each.



In another match, Bhaktapur registered a 22-run win over Nuwakot. Bhaktapur posted a total of 94/9 as Sujit Maharjan garnered 36 runs and Anil Karki scored 19. Abhiraj Yadav and Dipendra Pyakurel claimed three wickets each for Nuwakot.



In the run-chase, Nuwakot was restricted to 62 runs in 17.3 overs. Niraj Shrestha (13) and Birat Paudel (16) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Apurva Ojha and man-of-the-match Anil Karki took three wickets each for Bhaktapur.



Sompal Thapa of Kathmandu was declared the man-of-the-series and also won the best batsman award. He scored 130 runs and claimed thee wickets during the tournament. Abhiraj Yadav of Nuwakot was adjudged the best bowler for his nine wickets. Anil Karki of Bhaktapur, who scored 80 runs and took six wickets, won the emerging player award.
