KATHMANDU, Jan 21: The government will put on hold its controversial decision to legalize property transactions carried out by the Maoist´s "people´s government" during the insurgency period.

According to a Baluwatar source, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has made up his mind to put on hold his government´s controversial decision that has led to obstruction in parliament by 17 parties demanding its revocation. [break]

"The prime minister has already initiated discussions with major parties in this regard and he is confident that the parties will reach an agreement to end the deadlock in parliament," said the source.

The source said the government will not revoke the cabinet decision but will simply send it to the cold freezer, never to be implemented again.

It´s unclear whether the parties obstructing the House will accept the prime minister´s offer.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Bhattarai told Speaker Subas Nembang that he would take initiative to end House obstruction without any delay.

"I will soon take all possible initiatives to end House obstruction," Nembang quoted the prime minister as telling him. The speaker had visited the prime minister at the latter´s official residence Friday evening to draw his attention toward the situation.

Nembang told the prime minister that the stalemate in parliament was seriously affecting the task of drafting the new constitution and concluding the peace process.

"I also drew the prime minister´s attention toward the lack of progress in constitution writing as the Constitutional Committee (of the Constituent Assembly) has failed to make any progress in recent days," Nembang told Republica.

Prime Minister Bhattarai also met youth leaders from various political parties Friday evening and informed them about the government´s intention to put on hold the cabinet´s controversial decision.

"We must move forward through cooperation and I am in favor of holding the decision to end House obstruction," Rabindra Adhikari of UML quoted the prime minister as saying.

NC leaders Narahari Acharya, Gagan Thapa, UML´s Yogesh Bhattarai, TMPD´s Jitendra Sonal and Jitendra Dev of MPRF-D were among the leaders who met prime minister Bhttarai at his residence Baluwatar.
