KATHMANDU, Jan 22: Even as the Maoist-led government is mulling to put on hold the controversial cabinet decision to legalize conflict-era land dealings, opposition parties do not seem convinced.

Various major opposition parties, including the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, have vowed to continue with their protests and obstruct the House until the government revokes the decision.[break]

“The decision has to be revoked from the cabinet. We will continue with our protests and obstruct the House until the decision is revoked from the cabinet,” said NC Vice-president and Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Paudel.

Paudel argued that the government should immediately revoke the “unconstitutional” decision as this has already been challenged both by the court and the opposition parties.

Pradeep Gyawali of CPN-UML also ruled out the possibility of opposition parties ending their protests until the government revokes the decision.

“It is our firm stance that the government must revoke the cabinet decision because it contravenes the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and other accords,” UML Spokesman Gyawali told Republica.

He said the non-Maoist parties had earlier agreed to address some of the issues in view of the Maoist leaders´ practical problems but the matter of land transactions was not discussed. “For instance, we agreed to bring the vehicles under illegal possession of Maoist leaders under the purview of the government but the matter of land transactions hasn´t been even mentioned in any of the documents,” Gyawali added. “The decision is politically unacceptable and deplorable.”

Various 17 opposition parties including NC and UML on Friday had obstructed House proceedings, demanding that government revoke the decision to legalize property transactions carried out under the arbitration of the Maoist´s ´people´s government´ during insurgency period.

During a meeting with young leaders of NC, UML and some Madhes-based parties at his official residence in Baluwatar Friday evening, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai had hinted that the government would put on hold the decision apparently to appease the protesting parties. Supreme Court has also stayed the government decision.
