KATHMANDU, Sept 25: The German embassy in Kathmandu has refuted recent media reports on remarks of German Ambassador to Nepal, Frank Meyke saying that those news reports were baseless.

In a statement, on Wednesday, the embassy said, “The attention of German Embassy is drawn towards recent news items which quoted Ambassador Meyke as saying at a function in Tanahun district that people should not vote for a political party that enforces bandas. This is not correct.” [break]

The embassy has insisted that the ambassador did not make such a statement. Reiterating Germany and the European Union’s views on bandas, the embassy said, "Bandhs also undermine our joint development efforts and Nepal´s investment perspectives. This has been our consistent position.”
