Former governor of Nepal Rastra Bank Dr Tilak Rawal said the decision to recognize cooperatives as one of the three pillars of national economy must be reviewed. “The decision undermines the contribution of private sector in GDP and employment generation,” Rawal added.

Senior economist Chiranjibi Nepal slammed the government for including cooperative as one of the three pillars of national economy without introducing effective laws and policies to regulate the sector.

Speaking at the program, economist Dr Bimal Koirala said the upcoming budget should be able to address all problems facing the national economy. “Containing inflation should be one of the priorities of the budget,” Koirala added. He also suggested the government and the political parties to stick to open market policy.

Pashupathi Murarka, vice-president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said the upcoming budget should be able to create investment friendly climate in the country. “If the government wants to boost the confidence of private sector, it should end liquidity crunch, address labor problem, arrange uninterrupted power supply and guarantee security of private sector investment,” Murarka added.

Suresh Basnet, president of Nepal Chamber of Commerce, echoed Murarka and requested the government to create investment friendly climate in the country.
