Speaking at a function in Chitwan, Basnet claimed that the mistakes of Nagarik, Kantipur daily and other big publications have been overlooked and demanded action against them. [break]
Basnet had earlier threatened to shut down Nagarik and throw its Editor-in-Chief Narayan Wagle behind bars for reporting against him and his organization.
Having admitted to issuing the threats at a press conference in Pokhara on August 21, Basnet again backtracked on it and claimed that his Biratnagar speech was distorted.
“I have got a CD of that speech which has been copied even in my cell phone. It was published in a wrong way,” Basnet said referring to the news about his threats on Nagarik and its Editor-in-Chief Wagle, police officers and their families.
“That was a protest program in Biratnagar and I may have got carried away. But I didn´t exactly speak as reported in the media,” Basnet added. He claimed that Parshuram Basnet and other fellow comrades have been falsely charged of attacking journalist Dhakal.
“It is not fair to publish news that can get someone arrested and end his political career. Corrupt police personnel are trying to frame Parshuram on false charges,” Basnet claimed.
He claimed that around 25 percent of journalists affiliated with the Federation of Nepalese Journalist (FNJ) are close to him and accused the media of not showing interest in attacks on other journalists and blowing the Biratnagar incident out of proportion.
