NEPALGUNJ, Aug 12: As early as 17 years ago, floods in the Rapti and Daduwa rivers would inundate huge parts in both India and Nepal in the rainy season. In fact, India would be more affected by the monsoon floods. In, 2000, India constructed a marginal embankment at Kalkalwa which changed the whole scenario. The embankment secured India but many parts of Nepal became prone to floods.

Flood kills four of a family in Sindhuli

SINDHULI, Aug 12: Landslides triggered by incessant and heavy rainfall for almost a week have killed four persons of the same family in Kamalamai Municipality of Sindhuli district in the wee hours of Saturday. The victims had been living in a makeshift tent at Sindhulimadi-2 of the district. The deceased have been identified as Durga Kumari Khadka, 32, her 15-year-old daughter Shova, 10-year-old son Anish, and another 8-year-old son Manish, according to the District Police Office, Sindhuli. Luckily, Durga's husband Udaya Bahadur Khadka managed to flee and save his life. He is the sole survivor of the family.

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Electricity supply to Biratnagar, Anarmani, Duhabi and other cities east of Biratnagar has been disrupted as the Duhabi-based 132 KVA substation has been inundated by floods, cutting off import of electricity from India. Incessant rain for the last two days caused the folds, said a press notice issued by Nepal Electricity Authority.

JHAPA, Aug 12: Floods and landslides triggered by excessive rain claimed 20 lives  in the eastern districts of the country on Friday and Saturday. As of Saturday evening, eight deaths have been reported from Sunsari, four from Morang, four from Sindhuli, two from Jhapa and one each from Tehrathum and Panchthar districts.

30 dead, thousands displaced

Nearly a dozen  people have gone missing since Friday in various districts across the country, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
