POKHARA, June 21: Cadres of the Young Communist League (Maoists´ youth wing) have beaten up Balram Giri, a government school teacher associated with Tarun Dal (Nepali Congress youth wing) in Syangja on Saturday afternoon.[break]

Giri, 33, was asked to get out of a jeep on its way to Malyangkot from Waling after which he was beaten severely.

The teacher sustained serious injuries to his head and limbs and was airlifted to Kathmandu on Sunday after preliminary treatment in hospitals in Waling and Pokhara.

An employee of Ram Mandir Secondary School, Giri was regional chairman of Tarun Dal´s constituency area committee.

The Nepali Congress has registered a police case against three YCL cadres in connection with the attack. A Nepali Congress activist said that although they have identified three, others involved in Giri´s beating remain unidentified.

Police said they are searching for those involved. "We are looking for them," Deputy Superintendent of Police Gopal Bahadur Rayamajhi said. "Until now, nobody has been arrested."

Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress and the Teachers´ Association have closed Syangja down in protest of the incident.
