Workers federation put forth 11-point demands to PM

KATHMANDU, Oct 3: The Confederation of Nepalese Professionals, a representative body of Nepalese professional associations, submitted an 11-point memorandum to Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Wednesday.



The memorandum, which was handed over on the occasion of International Trade Union Day, includes demands for free health insurance, ration card to all workers and government bailout plans to revive sick Public Enterprises (PEs), among others.[break]



Premal Kumar Khanal, first vice-president of the confederation said, the memorandum was mainly focused on issues relating to the guarantee of five basic rights of the people -- food, education, health, housing and drinking water.



“The memorandum, which has stressed on ensuring those five basic rights of the people, has been submitted to the PM Bhattarai through chief secretary Lilamani Poudel to draw the government attention toward the welfare of the workers,” said Khanal.According to Khanal, the confederation has suggested that the government increase farm investment to increase food production, guarantee quality and free education, and arrange housing facility to landless people.



Similarly, the memorandum also cover the demands for free health insurance to workers, revival of ailing PEs through government bailout plan to create more employment opportunities and investment in production sector to reduce imports.



“Besides, we have demanded the government to control corruption, black marketing and strengthen good governance in the country. We have also asked the government to issue ration card for workers,” said Khanal.



Responding to the workers concern, Chief Secretary Poudel said the government was serious to about addressing the issues raised by the confederation.

The confederation on the day also organized a rally in the capital with the participation of 24 Nepalese professional organizations.
