Nepal Army player Adhikari lifted 118 kg in snatch to better his previous record by one kg. In total he raised 270 kg. Earlier, Adhikari held the national record of 268 kg in total.[break]
Earlier, in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Adhikari had lifted 268 kg in total including 154 kg in clean and jerk and 114 kg in snatch, to set a national record.
In the Fifth National Games held in Kathmandu the same year, Adhikari had lifted 115 kg in snatch and set a new national record. He then bettered that record in the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) earlier this year with a 117 kg lift in snatch. However, he was stripped of medal due to technical mistake he had committed in clean and jerk.
Adhikari, however, failed to better his record of 154 kg in clean and jerk. He lifted 145 kg in the first attempt and 150 kg in the second but failed to hold 155 kg in jerk though he was able to lift it. He was successful in 110 kg, 115 kg and 118 kg respectively in snatch.
Adhikari will bag a purse of Rs 10,000 as declared by Nepal Weightlifting Association Vice-president Sharadabhakta Ranjit. "New record is what matters to me more than money. I am very much delighted, and this Asian Games became fruitful for me," Adhikari told Republica.
Adhikari added that he was determined to forget the pains of the 11th SAG. "I faced a humiliating situation in the SAG because of my own mistake, and I was committed to making this competition a memorable one. This result is the outcome of the hard efforts of my guru and me," Adhikari, who is Nepal´s only representative in weightlifting at the Games, said.
