US investors seek investment security

BIRATNAGAR, April 16: A senior US official has said business people in the world´s largest economy were interested to invest in Nepal´s hydropower sector if the government assured them on the security of their investment.



“At present US investors are hesitating to invest in Nepal given the insecure investment climate in the country,” Heather Revariava, director of State Department (South Asia) of the US, said at a program held in Biratnagar on Tuesday. [break]



She was addressing an interaction on ´US Policy in South Asia´ organized jointly by US Embassy in Kathmandu, Industries Association of Morang and US Corner Center.

On the occasion, Shyam Katawal, Dean of Purbanchal University, urged US government to increase investment in hydropower sector.



“Major energy developers in the world are active in US. We are ready to promote investment in Nepal´s hydropower sector if the government here developed investment friendly environment,” said Revariava. “I am confident that investment in hydropower sector won´t go to waste as Nepal is one of the richest countries in terms of water resources.”



She also stressed to need to hold election at the earliest and form stable government to create environment conducive for foreign investment.



The US officials were in Biratnagar to assess the impact of US support in South Asia.
