SIRAHA, Sept 21: The Eastern Regional Police has said that various underground armed outfits operating in the Tarai and hilly areas would be a major security challenge in the upcoming Constitution Assembly election.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Upendra Kant Aryal informed that a special security plan has been put in place to ensure free and fair polls. “Underground outfits are a major challenge and we have prepared a security plan in view of possible threats to election from the Sanghiya Limbuwan Party in the hilly areas and underground outfits active in the Tarai region,” said Aryal. “We feel that along with the underground outfits, criminal groups might as well pose a challenge to the November elections. We would leave no stone unturned to make sure that the polls are held in a fearless environment.”

Aryal further said, “The implementation of regional security plan will dispel existing threats, paving the way for free and fair election.” Lilanath Shrestha, the Siraha district Chairman of CPN-UML, said voters are more concerned about security than the election. “Voters should be guaranteed security as they still fear whether the elections would be peaceful,” he said.

He also drew attention of the security agencies and election officials saying that politicians have already started inviting criminals from India to mobilize them during the polls.

Deputy chair of the Nepali congress party in Siraha district Arun Yadav stressed the need for special security measure to discourage crimes during the election.

Chief district Officer Anil Kumar Thakur said the district administration would take special measure to foil untoward activities during the polls. Meanwhile, two outfits operating in the eastern Tarai have warned of disrupting the election. Akhil Tarai Mukti Morcha led by Jaya Krishna Goit and Prajatantrik Tarai Mukti Morch led by Jwala Singh issued a joint statement saying they have agreed to carry out activities to disrupt the elections.
