The party´s top body concluded that hooliganism, anarchy, misuse of the organization and the tendency to run parallel committees had seriously plagued the student wing and addressing this was more urgent than holding the national event.[break]
The standing committee drew the conclusion based on recommendations offered by a taskforce investigating physical attacks and other undisciplined activities found within the student organization recently.
The taskforce headed by party Secretary Yuwaraj Gyawali suggested that the student wing statute convention should be held only after addressing the problems seen among student leaders.
Politburo member Ganga Lal Tuladhar and central committee member Bhanubhakta Dhakal were in the three-member taskforce. Some ANNFSU members were found to be involved in the attack. The panel was formed as similar attacks occured at various other colleges and districts also.
Sources said the taskforce in its report suggested action against ANNFSU secretariat member Aein Bahadur Mahara and four other members.
"We suggested to the party to hold the convention only after resolving problems such as hooliganism and anarchy in the student union," Gyawali told Republica.
The taskforce found the tendency at various colleges such as Law Campus, TriChandra and Amrit Science College in Kathmandu and in some districts including Parsa, Kailali, Udaypur and Panchthar.
"We recommended postponement because we realized that holding the event without addressing these problems would further encourage anarchy in the organization instead of resolving them," Dhakal told Republica.
While probing the attack that took place at the Law Campus the panel found a link to various other incidents. "Therefore, we suggested to the party leadership to address the general tendency first," he explained.
ANNFSU Chairman Madhav Dhugel, however, said he was surprised when he heard about the mother party´s decision. "Though we are unhappy with the decision we are compelled to obey it," said Dhungel.
Admitting that there were some disciplinary problems in his organization, he claimed that it was blown out of proportion. He termed the party decision unfortunate.
The convention was to discuss the policies of the student organization and was mandated to make amendments and other changes in the union statute.
