UDMF warns to obstruct passage of budget

KATHMANDU, July 9: The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has warned that it would not allow parliament to endorse the annual budget if the government fails to address its demands.



A meeting of the UDMF, an alliance of five Madhes-based parties, held at Singh Durbar on Saturday decided to submit memorandum to Finance Minister Bharatmohan Adhikari on Sunday.[break]



“We will submit memorandum to the finance minister on Sunday. If we don´t receive positive response from him we will not allow parliament to endorse the annual budget,” Hridayesh Tripathi, Vice-Chairman of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) told Republica.



Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato said they decided to take the step as the government has not taken their demands seriously.



The UDMF has demanded that the government allocate Rs 5 million to establish schools in the name of 52 martyrs of the Madhes movement in their respective districts and Rs 20 million for the treatment and rehabilitation of those injured during the movement, construction of postal roads and the proposed East-West Railway in the Tarai region and subsidies in the import of chemical fertilizers and other agricultural equipment.



The UDMF has demanded the release central member of Student Front of TMDP Suresh Giri who was arrested few days ago for his alleged involvement in abduction.
