UDMF agrees to sit for talks with three parties

KATHMANDU, Sept 30: United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) on Wednesday decided to sit for talks with government in principle to end the ongoing political stalemate in the country.

A meeting of the UDMF held at Gaur, Rautahat this morning decided to this effect, Mahantha Thakur, Chairman of the Terai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) informed.According to the decision, TMDP Chairman Thakur will hold discussion with to three-party leaders on Thursday. UDMF will then form its talks team if the top leaders agree to send formal letter to UDMF with their commitment to implement the past agreements reached with Madhesi leaders.

A meeting of the Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and the UCPN (Maoist) on Monday had formed the talk-team comprising Minister for Forests and Soil Conservation Mahesh Acharya, CPN-UML chief whip Agni Kharel and UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

The talk-team had held several rounds of discussions with the disgruntled Madhes leaders including Thakur and Federal Democratic Madhesi Morcha leader Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar earlier.

A three-member talks team on Tuesday had separately met with Thakur and Gachchhadar and urged them to back down the blockade in border areas to start political negotiations.

During the talks, Madhesi leaders had asked the government to meet their preconditions to start political negotiations and reiterated that curfew at different places should be lifted and cases against their cadres arrested during the protest should be dropped. Likewise, they asked for declaring the dead protestors as martyrs, provide reparation to their families and provide free treatment to the injured.
