Turn on the music

Recommending music can be a tricky thing. Even when we're certain to have stumbled on 'the best tune ever', there's no guarantee that other people will share the same level of enthusiasm. And that's always such a big bummer. Nevertheless, somebody's got to do it.

Recommendations, after all, are one of the best way to discover new artists and new sounds. So we rang up Fuzz Factory's music producer and director, the front man of Jindabaad, Rohit Shakya, to ask what's on his playlist.

Excerpts:

What's keeping you busy at the moment?

We're going to start working on a music video, so we're busy with the shoots for that. It's for the band Shadows. I'm looking forward to that. Besides Fuzz Factory, I'm also continuing with my own music. I wanted to collaborate with different artists, build a solid collection, so I'm doing that on the side as well.

Are you still high from the tour with Astha Tamang Maskey? How was the experience?

Oh, the experience was overwhelming. Three months across Australia, the UK, India and then back to Nepal, the tour was amazing. It was a first of its kind for all of us, and it actually made me look forward to the scope of surviving on the things that we love to do.

By the way, what are your thoughts on mainstream music?

I don't think there are such things as mainstream and underground music these days. Everybody has platforms and they can use them to get as much exposure as they would like. I'm not biased towards either. All I want is good music.

Are there any embarrassing songs on your iPod then?

(Laughs) It's not that I'm embarrassed. It's part of my work. I need to research the tunes, so I listen to all kinds of music: Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and the lot. And why not?

What about the new talents on the scene? How do you discover them?

It's got to be the Internet. The days when people personally swapped CDs and cassettes are long gone. For somebody looking for anyone or anything new, the Internet is full of varieties of options. It's a great advantage.
