Thoker wins ICIMOD award

KATHMANDU, June 5: Republica"s photojournalist Keshab Raj Thoker has won the People"s Choice Award under the category of hazards, conflict or issues of water in the Digital Photo Contest organized by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) on the occasion of World Environment Day.



Thoker won the award for his photo of a house that was swept away by a landslide some 40 meters downhill in Machchhegaun VDC of Kathmandu during the last monsoon. Thoker"s photo had received likes from 2,763 people on the social networking site Facebook. After winning the award, Thoker thanked everyone who had liked his photo on Facebook, where he wrote after being declared the winner: ´I could not have done it without you.´ [break]



Similarly, Thandar Soe of Myanmar and Chandra Man Dangol of Nepal won the same award under categories of Uses or Benefits of Water and Related Resources and Good Practices in Water and Related Risk Management respectively. Their photos had received 1,822 and 720 likes respectively.



The first prize in the contest went to Samsul Huda Patgiri of India. Pakistan"s Muhammad Asad Salim and Nepal"s Uttam Babu Shrestha received the second and the third awards respectively, according to a statement issued by the ICIMOD on Wednesday.
