KATHMANDU, Sept 30: Inap Raj Shrestha, a graduate of Travel and Tourism Management from Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM), is a German language instructor at Goethe Zentrum at Babar Mahal. He’s been working there since 2011.

Inap is also the saxophonist of the popular reggae band, Joint Family Internationale, which bagged three music awards at the recently held annual Hits FM Music Awards.

He has recently joined Cadenza, one of the pioneer jazz groups of Nepal. [break]

On the other hand, Inap has also been working at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory since 2010 as a Music Theory Teacher. “I teach western music theory there,” he says.

Besides, he also has the experience of working at Nepal Airlines as an intern during his studies.

Why do you think one should take a foreign language course?

To answer that, I would like to quote American author Louis L’Amour: “When you go to a country, you must learn how to say two things – how to ask for food and tell a woman that you love her. Of these, the second is more important, for if you tell a woman you love her she will certainly feed you.”

What got you interested in these fields?

I started learning German with an aim to go to Germany for further studies. Somehow it didn’t work out well. But I was in love with this language, and I continued to learn it, eventually becoming the language teacher.

Similarly, I’ve always loved music since my childhood. But it was only after I finished my high school that I decided to learn music and pursue it seriously. Luckily, things went well, and my hard work paid off.

How do you maintain the balance between being a musician and a language instructor?

To maintain balance between these two professions, I start teaching German quite early in the morning so that I have enough time for my practice sessions during the day.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement till date?

Being able to fulfill my dreams and live my passion! This is what I would consider to be a great achievement, because most people of my country don’t get to do it.

What motivates you?

Hunger for learning more and more and the wish to get better each day are what motivate me a lot.

What’s the best thing about being a language instructor who’s also a musician?

As you know, communication is everything in this world. And I have the ability to do that in two different ways – through music and through language.

Tell us about your work ethics.

I always make sure that I give my full efforts to whatever I do.

Where do you see yourself in the long run?

In the long run, I would love to find myself playing in different concerts all over the world, wherever possible.
