However, the authorities, which are supposed to monitor such wrongdoings, is unaware and apathetic toward it.

“Meat of unhealthy animal can have serious effect on the consumers. So, the people should be cautious while buying meat, cautioned Mishrilal Saha, a doctor at Lahan Hospital.

The Local Self Government Act has entrusted the local bodies like Municipalities and District Development Committees to monitor and regulate meat products.

However, the authorities rarely monitor the market, the locals complained.

“Butchers increase the price of meat products on their own. Recently they increased the price of a kilogram of goat meat to Rs 600 but the concerned authority have failed to check it,” Rakesh Gupta, a Civil Society leader said.

“People don´t even know where to lodge complaint against such incidents,” he added.

Nevertheless, the District Police Office stated that the trend of selling she-goat meat at a high price has been discouraged after the police took action against the wrongdoers.
