SPORTS BRIEFS: Soaltee Crowne Plaza golf from Friday

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Soaltee Crowne Plaza, in association with Royal Nepal Golf Club, is organizing the Soaltee Crowne Plaza Social Golf Tournament in Kathmandu from Friday with the aim of promoting golf tourism. The two-day tournament will be played over 18 holes with ¾ handicap allowance under Stableford format, the organizers said in a press statement on Tuesday. The participants will be vying for titles in the overall men"s section, ladies" section and diplomat guest category. There are also awards for most birdies, closest to the pin, hole in one, longest drive, best golfer among 5-star hotels and best sportsman. The overall winner of the tournament will be awarded with a round-trip ticket to any international network of Fly Dubai.



Seema Khadka wins gold in karate


KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Seema Khadka secured gold for Nepal in the Women"s Open International Karate Championship that concluded recently in Kolkata, India. Khadka defeated a Japanese player 7-4 in the final of the women"s 40 kg weight category to clinch gold. Earlier, she had defeated players from Russia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India en route to the final. Meanwhile, another Nepali player Manisha Ranabhat secured silver medal in the tournament. Ranabhat had to settle for the second position as she was defeated 4-7 by a Japanese player in the final of the women"s 55 kg weight category. Nepal also won the Grand Kumute Champion Trophy in the tournament, according to karate coach Deepak Shrestha. The tournament was organized to mark the International Women"s Day on April 27.



NeCOS taekwondo c"ship from Thursday


KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): The second edition of NeCOS National Taekwondo Championship is all set to kick off in the capital on Thursday. Altogether 480 players from 46 teams are competing in the three-day event, according to tournament coordinator Ishwar Bidari. There are 16 golds up for grabs in the tournament, including 10 in gerogi and 6 in poomse events, the organizer Nepal Confederation of Sports (NeCOS) said during a press conference on Tuesday. The total cost of the tournament is estimated to be Rs 1.13 million. All the matches of the tournament will be held at the covered hall of the National Sports Council in Tripureshwar.



Nat´l Youth Boxing in Dang

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): The Second National Youth Boxing Tournament will be held in Dang next month. Organizing a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) said the tournament will be held from May 29 to June 2. According to NBA President Rajiv Shrestha, altogether 200 male players will be vying for seven gold medals during the tournament. The estimated cost of the event is Rs 1 million. NBA on Tuesday provided Rs 100,000 to the organizer, Dang District Boxing Association, to conduct the tournament.
