KATHMANDU, June 3: Nepal claimed the title of NSKA International Karate Championship for sixth time in row on Sunday. In course of lifting team championship title, Nepal claimed 35 gold, 22 silver and 29 bronze medals at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium. India secured second position winning eight gold, 22 silver and 29 bronze medals while UAE finished third with two gold, six silver and nine bronze medals. [break]
Nepal´s Krisha Shrestha and Diwas Shrestha were declared the best female and male players respectively. Krisha bagged five gold and one silver and bronze while Diwas bagged five gold and a silver medal.
During the last day of tournament, Suman Kumar Karki in above 20 year age and Niraj Kumar Karki in U-20 category bagged gold in men´s singles kata. Both of them are from Nepal.
The four-day long tournament was organized by Nepal Sotokan Karate Association.
Nepali shuttlers to compete in Thail open grand prix
KATHMANDU: Nepali shuttlers will compete in SCG Thai Open Grand Prix Gold Level to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from Tuesday. The seven member Nepali team including five players and two officials will leave for Bangkok on Monday.
Among five players four of them are from Armed Police Force (APF) and one from Nepal Police. National champion Bikash Shrestha, Indra Mahat and Ratnajit Tamang are the male players while national women champion Nangsaladevi Tamang and Samjhana Khaling are female players. Shrestha is from Police while other four players are from APF.
Nepali team will compete in five categories including men´s and women´s singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The event carries total cash prize of $ 120,000, according to Nepal Badminton Association General Secretary Ramji Shrestha. All the players who make into pre-quarterfinal will be awarded cash prize. The event is considered the second biggest international badminton tournament.
According to Shrestha, the qualifying for the tournament was held some three weeks ago. Meanwhile, National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama and NBA President Ramesh Kumar Shrestha bade farewell to the team.
Forward, Greenland triumph
KATHMANDU: Forward and Greenland won their respective matches under boys´ section in the First BST Cup Inter-school Basketball Tournament being held in the capital on Sunday. Forward defeated host BST 29-15 with eight points from Anil Magar. Greenland edged past Mount Glory 29-15. Milan Puri netted 10 points for Greenland. In other matches, Nawajeevan defeated Sweta Sadan School 39-18, Kathmandu Valley overcame Bhadrakali 34-22, and Innovative ousted Angel´s Heart 37-15. Under girls´ section, TIA edged past Bagmati 21-19 and Kantipur thrashed BST 10-4.
Amar Jyoti, Brihaspati win
KATHMANDU: Amar Jyoti and Brihaspati Vidhya Sadan registered wins in the Guheshwari Girls´ Cup Six A Side Football Tournament on Sunday. With a goal from Roshni Shrestha Amar Jyoti beat Modern Indian 1-0. Shrestha scored the decider in the second half of the game. In another match, Brihaspati defeated Manshing 1-0. Anisha Gurung scored the winning goal.
Boris Lissanevitch tennis kicks off
KATHMANDU: Ashok Kunwar and Dipendra Thapa on Sunday advanced to the pre-quarterfinal in U-16 boys´ singles of the First Boris Lissanevitch Memorial Junior Open Tennis Tournament that kicked off on Sunday.
In the matches played at Satdobato tennis court, Kunwar overcame Bibek Shrestha 6-4, 6-3 while Thapa defeated Brijesh Suwar 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
In the U-14 boys singles, Samrakchyan Bhusan Bajracharya thumped Satyap Ilam 6-0, 6-0, Abhay Gauchan routed Thomas Roster 6-0, 6-0, Aryan Maskey saw off Sworaj Chaudhary 6-0, 6-3, Sakchyam Karki beat Pragun Raj Bhandari 6-0, 6-0, Subodh Udas defeated Kastur Raj Pandey 6-0, 6-1, Aavash Malla thumped Kavin Reed 6-0, 6-1, Avi Subedi saw off Pranav Khanal 6-0, 6-0 and Pranav Kayastha defeated Arjan Dhungel 6-1, 6-1 and advanced to the quarterfinal.
In U-14 girls´ singles, Mahika Rana defeated Chhimi Sherpa 6-1, 6-0, Bibhuti Karki saw off Kathrin Mathema 6-0, 6-1, Karun Gauchan beat Pritika Manandhar 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, Sachi Gurung saw off Sanjita Rana 6-0, 6-1, Ani Mathema thrashed Tanisa Khetan 6-0, 6-0, Shivalika Rana beat Salina Pradhan 6-2, 6-4 and Bijisha Shrestha overcame Meghavi Giri 6-1, 6-0 while Mayanka Rana received walk over from Sumnima Subba for the quarterfinal spot.
Altogether 65 boys and 51 girls are participating in the U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18 categories. The winners of the all categories, except for U-10 and U-12, will receive Rs 10,000 while the runners up will get Rs 5,000 . The winners and runners up of U-10 and U-12 will receive gift hampers in a week-long tournament. All Nepal Tennis Association has kept the tournament in its yearly calendar.
APF thumps U-19 cricket team
KATHMANDU: Armed Police Force (APF) team registered 136 runs victory against U-19 cricket team on Sunday in the seventh practice match. U-19 team has been playing practice matches with different teams. Winning the toss APF batted first and were bowled out for 254 runs. Sharad Vesawkar scored 66 runs from as many deliveries that included five fences and three sixes. Opener and skipper Dipendra Chaudhary scored 53 runs off 69 balls with six boundaries. Paresh Lohani scored 38 runs. Krishna Karki grabbed four wickets in 10 overs conceding 65 runs.
Saurab Khanal took three wickets while Bhuwan Karki grabbed two wickets. Chasing the huge target of 255 runs, U-19 managed to score only 118 runs losing all the wickets in 34.3 overs. Opener Subash Khakurel was the highest scorer with 24 runs off 26 balls. Fajlur Rehman scored 18 runs while Naresh Budhayer and Avinash Karn scored 15 runs each. Sharad Vesawakar grabbed five wickets in 6.3 overs conceding 13 runs while Rupesh Shrivastav grabbed two wickets.
