SPORTS BRIEFS: Gupta nominated technical official

KATHMANDU, May 23: Partha Sarathi Sengupta, chief of the Training Department of National Sports Council, is nominated as the technical official for the World Weightlifting Championship.



The Championship is scheduled to be held in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital from June 12. [break]



Gupta will take charge of referee, jury or technical controller in the Junior Men´s and Women´s categories of the championship.





Karki starts Peace Race



KATHMANDU, May 23: Long distance runner Ram Sundar Karki started the Kathmandu-Lumbini Peace Race on Sunday.



Karki, a resident of Godamchaur, Lalitpur, said that he is running with the appeal of sustainable peace and world peace.



Karki claimed that he would complete the 340-km race on Thursday to mark the day of Buddha´s birth.



National Sports Council Member-Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary and the first Nepali Olympian Bhupendra Silwal bade farewell to Karki at the NSC premises on Sunday.





PK, NCC in final



KATHMANDU, May 23: Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) and the ´A´ team of hosts Padma Kanya (PK) Campus entered the final of the Valley-wide Inter-campus Vice-chancellor Cup Women´s Volleyball Tournament on Sunday.



Libero Alina Thapa´s enthusiastic performance gave PK a 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 win over Shankar Dev Campus. Likewise, NCC thrashed the ´B´ team of PK 25-23, 25-11, 25-9 in the second semifinal match played at the court of PK Campus.



The final match will be played on Monday.





Everest, KCMIT in QF



KATHMANDU, May 23: Everest College and KCMIT entered the quarterfinals of the Inter BBA Cricket Tournament organized by College of Applied Business. Everest defeated Shankar Dev College by 99 runs at the Birendra Sainik School Ground, Bhaktapur on Sunday.



Batting first, Everest scored 178 runs in allotted 20 overs losing their six wickets. Ashutosh Gautam struck 36 runs for Everest while Sarvesh Pokharel scored 35 runs. In reply, Shankar Dev were limited to 79 runs in 20 overs losing nine wickets.



Likewise, KCMIT thrashed Universal College by five wickets in the second match of the day. Universal put up 130 runs in 20 overs losing six wickets. In reply, KCMIT met the target in 18 overs losing five wickets. Manoj Rawal scored unbeaten 45 runs for the winning side.
