The prime minister said that the same elements that are against the successful conclusion of the constitution drafting and peace process have been engineering recent incidents of murder, violence and terror. “We can move ahead toward building new Nepal only if there is unity among the political parties,” he said.
At the same function, FNJ conferred the newly-established Krishna Prasad Bhattarai National Award on senior journalist Kishor Nepal. The national award carries a purse of Rs 100,001. Senior journalist Nepal, who is currently associated with Nepal Republic Media Limited, has been in the journalism sector for the past four decades.
The prime minister appreciated the efforts made by the FNJ to establish the award in honor of late Bhattarai. He added that the role played by Bhattarai in the democratic struggle was exemplary. “The establishment of the award has helped make his contribution memorable,” he said.
The prime minister also noted that Nepali media sector was doing exceptionally good after the restoration of democracy in 1990 and pointed out the need to make journalism more responsible and pro-people.
Speaking on the occasion, FNJ Secretary Ramji Dahal urged the government to take the issue of raising allowance of working journalists seriously. He complained that a large number of journalists are still forced to work for meager salary even as workers in factories are now entitled to receive over Rs 10,000 a month.
The FNJ organized a tea-reception on Wednesday afternoon to mark its 56th founding anniversary. The FNJ also organized a procession earlier in the morning to mark its anniversary.
