LAHAN, Aug 23: All schools in Siraha were shut down for an indefinite period beginning Monday to protest the inability of police to trace a school boy, who was kidnapped a week ago.

Four-year-old Gaurab Chaudhari, who was kidnapped by an armed group a week ago, remains missing.[break]

Last Wednesday, more than a dozen organizations had issued a statement warning that educational institutions, government offices and financial institutions would be shut down for an indefinite period if the boy was not freed by Monday.

The statement was jointly issued by the Siraha Chamber of Commerce, Joint Employees Struggle Committee, PABSON, N-PABSAN, Human Rights Center, and Civil Society, among others.

While schools remained closed from the morning, government offices and financial institutions were closed after 10 am.

Last Tuesday, the boy was taken from near his house at Lahan-6 by unidentified men on a motorcycle.

According to family members, the kidnappers have not even contacted them.

Siraha police chief Ramesh Bhattarai said despite mobilizing a large number of security personnel, police are yet to get information about the boy´s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, inspector Laldhwaj Subedi of Lahan said since it is difficult to confine a child that age for a week, the role of close family acquaintances cannot be ruled out in the kidnapping.
