The South Korean government has proposed to the Nepal government to sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of railway service in Nepal.[break]
The cabinet meeting held on August 26 sent the South Korean government´s proposal to its Financial and Infrastructure Committee. The committee will decide on the issue after conducting necessary study.
Yogendra Kumar Rai, director general at the Department of Railways (DoR), described the proposal as a goodwill gesture from the South Korean government. “However, no specific project has been included in the proposal,” Rai added. He, however, hinted that the Korean proposal might be related to the proposed East-West Railway project.
Korea Railway Network Authority, the Korean government undertaking, is already involved in Nepal as a consultant.
“The Korean government has showed interest to develop railway service and transfer Korean technology to Nepal as well as train Nepali manpower,” Rai added.
A joint venture company, which includes the Korea Railway Network Authority, has recently completed Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Simara-Bardiwas section of East-West Railway project. The venture has also won the contract to prepare DPR of Simara- Butwal stretch of the East-West Railway.
According to Rai, a 12-member Korean delegation was recently in Nepal to meet officials of the MoPIT and DoR and discuss the prospect of developing railway service in Nepal.
DoR plans to lay down railway track on Simara-Bardibas stretch in this fiscal year.
