Rescue operation for stranded tourists begins

SOLUKHUMBU, Nov 6: The rescue operations for tourists stranded in Lukla since the last six days due to bad weather, has started from Sunday.



Helicopters from Surke, near Lukla have made more than 35 trips today. Hundreds of tourist reached Surke, on Saturday which is an hour and a half walk from Lukla.[break]



Helicopters have been flying tourists from Surke to Lamidanda, informed the Civil Aviation Authority, Lukla.



An aircraft belonging to Simrik Air took seven tourists to Kathmandu in the morning. Around two thousand five hundred foreigners and one thousand Nepali nationals are still stuck in Lukla which is currently struggling with food shortage.



Food and other necessary items have not reached Lukla for a week.
