The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) had unanimously approved Regmi as the successor of Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha, who retired Thursday.

Regmi, who has been serving in the judiciary for four decades, has a clean image and reputation for handing down bold verdicts. He was born on May 31, 1949 in Pokharathok- 6, Palpa district. He had joined the Supreme Court in 2003 as an ad hoc justice.

Regmi, who is an MA in Nepali literature and also holds a bachelor´s degree in law, will serve as CJ for about three years and a month starting from May.

Outgoing CJ Shrestha receives farewell

Meanwhile, a farewell program was held for outgoing Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha at the Supreme Court. Speaking at the program, Shrestha said he hoped that the new CJ would follow his footsteps.

Shrestha also came down heavily upon efforts to set up a constitutional court through the new constitution. He said such a court would ultimately invite dispute over jurisdiction.
