For instance, Bhishma KC, principal of Dang-based Tulashi High School, refused to act as superintendent for the SLC exams. All other teachers of the school too refused the post. They were under pressure from various teachers' unions and political parties not to accept the position."Various teachers' organizations and political leaders try to appoint teachers close to them as superintendent in an attempt to make the SLC exams lenient," said Gehendra Prasad Dahal, principal of Surkhet-based Shree Krishna Higher Secondary School.
"Many take the responsibility of superintendent as a means to earn money through bribery," he added.
Central Regional Education Director Ram Prasad Upadhyaya claimed that political parties have been influencing appointment of their close aides as superintendent to exercise their influence in the area and brag about it.
"Political parties are always seeking to fulfill their self-interest and exercise their influence, which is one of the reasons why they are very interested to appoint their close aides as superintendent," added Upadhyaya, who also has a vast experience of working as Chief Education Officer.
According to a teacher speaking on condition of anonymity, the main responsibility of superintendents appointed by political parties is to help certain students or group of students to get better score in the SLC exams by hook or crook.
"By doing so, they will not only get regular allowance, they would receive other incomes for helping. Those who play the role to assign them as superintendent would also receive their share from the income earned that way," he added, claiming that such superintendents would easily earn at least Rs 100,000.
