BIRATNAGAR, April 6: Poaching and smuggling of endangered wildlife continues unabated in Charkoshe Jhadi jungles in Sunsari district while the local administration remains indifferent to the problem. [break]

Poachers are hunting and smuggling deer and spotted deer from Itahari, Hansposa, Chakarghatti and Bharaut villages of Sunsari district to neighboring India. Last month only police released some poachers, who were arrested from Shantinagar forest in Itahari-2 along with a reddish deer. But no legal action was taken against the poachers, says Tej Bahadur Basnet, a local.

We know that the poachers roam around Charkose Jhadi forest with guns in broad daylight but police do not arrest them, complains Nar Bahadur Moktan, the president of Shantinagar Community Forest Group. "We cannot stop armed poachers as we don´t have weapons," rues Ganesh Bahadur Guragain, the president of the Federation of Community Forest Users Group.

Moktan says police have yet to arrest two poachers, caught with guns, despite lodging a complaint at the Police Office in Itahari.
