SARLAHI, Nov 4: The Nepali Congress in Sarlahi district organized torch rallies Saturday evening, condemning the government's indifference towards the recent murder of one of the party's cadres and the injuring of others in Boharwa village of Ramnagar Rural Municipality.
The district-wide rallies were organized from the bazaars in all 20 local government units of Sarlahi, informed Nagendra Kumar Raya, president of the party's Sarlahi chapter.As per the protest plans, the NC is to shut down all the marketplaces of the district on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. They have also announced a shutdown of vehicular movement along the East-West Highway for an hour the same day.On Wednesday, the party had submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Home Affairs through District Administration Office (DAO), Sarlahi.
NC blame police indifference for Sarlahi incident
NC said the torch rallies were the first phase of protests following the inaction of the government on the demands set out in the memorandum.The memorandum included various demands such as declaring the deceased a martyr, proper compensation for the family , free treatment for injured cadres, immediate action against those involved in the incident, and effective control of firearms.“
If the government continues to show indifference towards the incident and ignores our demands, we will plan a second phase of protests ,” said Raya.Last Monday, cadres of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) thrashed Ramnagar-4 Ward Chairman Ram Naresh Mahato while he was heading to office from his home. He was elected from the main opposition NC.
The next day, a group of NCP cadres came to Mahato's village and attacked him and other party members. His uncle Ram Bilash Mahato was shot to death while seven other NC cadres were wounded by bullet fragments.
