PM´s message on International Women´s Day

KATHMANDU, March 8: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has urged for solidarity in a campaign to empower women underscoring the government´s commitment to the policy of ´zero tolerance´ towards violence against women while calling for developing a culture for equal treatment.

In his message delivered on the occasion of the International Women´s Day, which falls on March 8, PM Koirala appealed to the government, non government organizations, private sector and the civil society for their contribution to uplift the country so as to make it a counterpart of the developed countries in terms of socio-economic development with insurance of rights.PM Koirala assured that the Constituent Assembly would ensure protection of the rights of women in the new constitution. He also said it was effortful to upgrade the living standard of women with the use of available resources by formulating policy, legal framework, planning, structure and programmes in line with the commitments made in the international instruments and create a balanced, prosperous and happy society.

He also underlined the need of assistance from private sector, non government and community based organizations for supporting the government´s initiative to bring the women´s status in par with their male counterparts through imparting quality education and access to the fundamental health service.

The PM also said the country´s strive towards socio-economic development could not take place without the participation of women. He said high priority had been accorded on ensuring women´s maximum representation while formulating government policy and programmes, and the work plans.

He added that the country´s development would not be possible sans development of women that make up more than 50 per cent of the total population.

He emphasized the reservation for women.
