The meeting called by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala was attended by top leaders of Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, UCPN (Maoist) and Madhesi People's Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D) and Acting chief of Nepal Army Rajendra Chhetri, Nepal Police Chief Upendra Kanta Aryal and Armed Police Force (APF) Chief Kosh Raj Onta and National Investigation Department (NID) Chief Dilip Raj Regmi.Sources said the meeting at the Prime Minister's Office in Singha Durbar was held to take stock of current security situation as protests against proposed provincial boundaries have erupted in unexpected places like Surkhet and Jumla districts. "We discussed ways to handle the ongoing protests and possible deterioration of security situation when federalism is implemented," said a source familiar with the development.
Although protests were expected in Tarai-Madhes areas, political leadership had not expected violent protests in Surkhet and Jumla. The meeting concluded that security situation may worsen after promulgation of the new constitution if unwanted elements are not discouraged on time.
The meeting with the prime minister was held after Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam held similar meeting with the chief of Nepal Police, APF and NID at the home ministry earlier in the day.
Prime Minister Koirala had held similar meeting with security chiefs on Tuesday amid worsening security situation in the country. Chiefs of security agencies had reportedly complained that they did not have enough time to make a contingency security plan as the proposed federal map was publicized all of a sudden.
Sources said security chiefs briefed the prime minister that there are credible evidences of forces that are opposed to constitution drafting process, including Netra Bikram Chanda Biplab-led Maoist faction and Mohan Baidya-led Maoist, inciting violence. They also pointed out that agitating Hindu groups may also pose threat after the new constitution is promulgated.
