KATHMANDU, Sept 1: The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) unanimously endorsed the government decision to appoint Madan Kumar Bhattarai, who retired as foreign secretary only two days ago, as Nepal´s ambassador to Japan.

PHSC Chairman Kul Bahadur Gurung announced the committee´s approval after it was convinced by the answers furnished by the ambassador-designate during the House panel´s meeting held in Singha Durbar, Thursday.[break]

Earlier, the PHSC had stalled the hearing, stating that the cabinet decision to recommend a hearing on Bhattarai as Nepal´s envoy to Japan was in conflict with the existing provision that allows hearing in the parliamentary committee only after the position lies vacant.

Later, the regulation was amended and the new provision allows the parliamentary committee to conduct hearing even before the position lies vacant.

While responding to lawmakers´ query, Bhattarai committed himself to take initiatives to create employment opportunities for Nepali youths in Japan.

Bhattarai, who has already served as Nepal´s ambassador to Germany, will now replace Ganesh Yonjan Tamang, who is due to retire after completing his four-year tenure as the Nepali envoy to Japan.
