NSU President Paudel announced his resignation through a press conference organized at the party´s headquarters in Sanepa before submitting a letter to that effect to party president Sushil Koirala. [break]
The resignation clears way for NC President Koirala to dissolve the NSU and go ahead with his proposal announced last week at the CWC meeting. A study committee comprising General Secretary Prakash Man Singh and CWC member Bal Bahadur KC had made the recommendation to dissolve the NSU body.
The proposal had fallen into minority as many CWC members, belonging to Sher Bahadur Deuba camp and others deemed close to Koirala himself, stood against dissolving the body. They favored a fresh general convention of the students´ body at the earliest under the current body-led by Pradip Paudel.
KC told Republica that Paudel´s resignation has helped to end the ongoing row on NSU dissolution.
“The CWC will now form a general convention preparation committee that will start the process to hold fresh general convention,” said KC. The CWC meeting called for Tuesday is likely to form the general convention preparation committee.
“The country expects NC to play a role in peace process and constitution drafting process. I decided to quit as I didn´t want the party to remain entangled in the trivial issue,” Pradip Paudel told Republica.
A disgruntled faction of NSU had alleged that Paudel wanted to remain in the post by not announcing a fresh date for NSU´s general convention.
In an apparent bid to counter those allegations, Paudel not only announced June 22 to 24 as fresh dates for general convention but also tendered his resignation. The meeting held at the call of President Paudel on Thursday was participated by 96 of the total 132 members in the NSU´s central committee.
