KATHMANDU, March 22: A faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba has decided to convene a separate Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, signaling deepening internal divisions within the party.

A meeting of leaders close to Deuba held in Dhumbarahi on Sunday took the decision, according to party leader Min Bishwokarma. He said discussions were held among leaders currently available in Kathmandu and a broader meeting involving all members will be called soon.

“The leaders present today agreed to hold a full meeting shortly. The acting vice-president has been entrusted with deciding the time and venue,” Bishwakarma said.

He added that the upcoming meeting will focus on the party’s future strategy.

The decision comes amid ongoing discussions within the party following its electoral defeat and internal disagreements over leadership and direction. The move by the Deuba faction is expected to further intensify intra-party tensions.

Earlier, despite objections from the Deuba and Dr Shekhar Koirala factions, a special general convention held from January 11–14 had elected a new leadership under Gagan Thapa. Both factions had challenged the legitimacy of the convention in the Supreme Court, where the case remains sub judice.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has already recognized Thapa’s leadership as official. The Nepali Congress, under his leadership, went on to contest the recent elections, where it suffered a defeat. While the central committee led by Thapa has been holding meetings to review the election outcome since Friday, the Deuba faction’s parallel move suggests growing friction within the party.
