NSC first member-secy passes away

KATHMANDU, Nov 24: Hora Prasad Joshi, the first member-secretary of National Sports Council (NSC) and an assistant minister in the first democratically elected government, passed away Tuesday night.



Joshi, 86, was suffering from high blood pressure for a long time and died while being taken to the Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, according to his family members.[break] Joshi´s youngest son Maheshwar told Republica that he died of heart attack.



Joshi was also the first member-secretary of the government instituted Nepal Olympic Committee. He was an assistant law minister in the BP Koirala led government in 1959, the year he became the member-secretary of the NSC.



Joshi, also a football player, was a member of the constitution drafting committee at the time. He was one of the founding members of the New Road Team (NRT) and used to play from the right wing for the team.



A freedom fighter during the Rana regime, Joshi was later to unveil the first draft on sports at the first sports mass meeting held soon after the establishment of democracy.



He read out the draft in the presence of the then King Tribhuvan, crown prince Mahendra, Prime Minister Mohan Shumsher and home minister Koirala. Late Joshi is survived by a wife, two sons and two daughters.
