KATHMANDU, Sept 6: The National Sports Council (NSC) has recommended Kabiraj Negi Lama, the coach of para taekwondo player Palesha Goverdhan who led Nepal to a historic medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024, for the position of Trainer Officer (Third Class) at the NSC.

On Thursday, the NSC recommended Lama for the Trainer Officer position to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, acknowledging his contribution. Under his guidance, Palesha Goverdhan secured a bronze medal at the Paris Paralympics, marking the biggest achievement in Nepal’s sports history.

Palesha won the bronze medal in the K-44 category for women under 57 kg. Lama, who has been serving as a volunteer coach, has already led Nepal to 11 international medals. Among these achievements is Nepal’s first-ever bronze medal in the fourth Asian Para Games.

Nepal has a longstanding tradition of appointing athletes and their coaches who win medals in international competitions to positions in the NSC in recognition of their success. Following this tradition, NSC Member Secretary Tanka Lal Ghising recommended Coach Lama as Trainer Officer.

Lama is also an international level-2 para taekwondo coach. The NSC has already recommended cash prizes for the athletes, coaches, managers, and the Nepal Taekwondo Association who contributed to the success at the Paris Paralympics, in accordance with the National Sports Development Regulations, 2079.

Before the Paris Paralympics, Nepal had not won any medals in the Olympics. Nepal began participating in the Paralympics in Athens in 2004 and in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.
