KATHMANDU, Dec 3: National Sports Council (NSC) on Friday decided to reward boxer Deepak Maharjan for securing Nepal´s only medal in the 16th Asian Games (Asiad) that concluded recently in Guangzhou, China.

NSC Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary speaking at a press meet, said Maharjan would be provided with a cash prize of Rs 300,000 and a job. [break]

Maharjan secured a bronze medal in the Asiad defeating Thai boxer Sukkhum Kriangkai in the men´s 81 kg quarterfinal bout. Maharjan broke the medal-drought of twenty years in the history of Nepali boxing in Asiad.

The last time that a Nepali boxer won any medal in the Asiad was in 1990 when Chitra Bahadur Gurung claimed Nepal´s only bronze in Beijing. Chaudhari acknowledged that though they couldn´t achieve expected success the victories of some of the players was praiseworthy.

NSC, NOC still at loggerheads

NSC officials have raised questions about the legitimacy of the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) and have stated that they won´t have any rapport with the NOC now on. Chaudhari also accused the NOC of challenging the Supreme Court verdict that does not recognize the current working committee of the NOC.

The officials also raised grave concerns over the NOC move to send players of five different sports -- which do not fall under 14 sports approved by their 76th board meeting -- to Guangzhou through unscrupulous channels.

They slammed the NOC for their ill treatment in Guangzhou. The NSC also complained that the accreditation cards were not on par with the respect they deserved.

“We only staged a minor protest in Guangzhou against NOC´s deplorable acts bearing in mind that getting involved in a dispute in a foreign land would tarnish our image,” states the press release signed by Chaudhary.

The NSC officials condemned the NOC for breaching an agreement according to which the Youth and Sports minister was supposed to lead Nepal during the Asiad. The two sports bodies had reached such an agreement ahead of the Asiad after a row over who should be designated the chef de mission surfaced.

“We won´t participate in the next Asiad or any other games under the current leadership of the NOC. The government should lobby separately for these games,” said NSC Vice President Pitambar Timsina.

The NSC officials said they were exercising restraint till now but that they wouldn´t compromise anymore.
