UDALGURI, Assam, Dec 13: The Meches of Nepal, who are believed to be the same tribes like Boro-Kacharis living in Assam in Northeast India, are going to perform their traditional folk dance and folk songs in a four-day long annual conference of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha slated to be held at Udalguri in Assam starting January 19 next year.

Anthropologists have noted that the life style of the Meches, who have been living in Nepal for centuries, have much similarity to those Bodo-Kacharis living in India´s Assam state. [break]

Even though the Nepali Meches form a minority linguistic group and that they are the Nepali nationals and mingled with the greater Nepali culture, yet, they have been able to safeguard their language in Nepal, though less spoken.

However, the Nepali Maches feel the sense of belonging to the Bodo-Kacharis of Assam and on many occasions, the cultural groups of the Meches from Mechi Anchal of Nepal visited Assam in the past.

Meanwhile, talking to Republica, Prasenjit Khakhlary, convenor of cultural sub-committee of the forth coming Bodo Sahitya Sabha conference said that the Bodo-Kacharis of Bodoland region in Assam are eagerly waiting to enjoy the cultural activities of the Nepali Meches on the grand occasion of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha conference.
