Geschwindner, also a physicist, had founded the optimum arc for jump shots using a combination of players´ height, arm length and release point. "As I was a student of Physics and Maths during my university, I thought of applying them in basketball and it has worked well,” Geschwindner told Republica during his recent Nepal tour.
He had developed the formulas in his hometown of Würzburg when he began working with a lanky 16-year-old named Dirk Nowitzki, voted Most Valuable Player of the NBA in 2007. Through their work, Geschwindner found that most players shoot the ball on too flat an arc. Nowitzki has become one of the most talented players of above seven foot height.
Geschwindner says that now the players who are of taller height have started shooting three pointers.
Geschwindner, an unofficial shooting coach for the Dallas Mavericks--Nowitzki´s team--relies on more than physics. He added that the players who were above seven foot used to play inside game, but the formulas he developed had changed the scenario of the game. “In the earlier periods, the players who used to play basketball were all amateurs and at present all are professionals.”
Sharing his initial phase into the game, Geschwindner said that he had learnt basketball from American soldiers after the World War. “I and some of my friends were allowed to visit the gym of the soldiers and later we built our own gym for training.”
Geschwindner further added that to develop basketball in Nepal, the country has to come up with new ideas that will gain the attention of the world. “Nepal can organize international-level highest altitude basketball tournament in Namche. If the tournament is conducted successfully, foreign teams will visit Nepal and help the country to develop the game.”
Geschwindner added that Nepal has made progress in many sectors than before. “When I visited Nepal last year, I remember putting up with frequent load shedding but this year there is no load shedding and we received internet service free of cost.”
The main objective of Geschwindner´s Nepal visit is for charity. Geschwindner and his friends donate utilities for children of Nepal. “We do not like to donate money for the children, we like to donate things required for them.”
