KATHMANDU, May 7: Citing the devastating earthquake, Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) has canceled its participation from WTF World Taekwondo Championships scheduled for May 12-18 in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

NTA President Prakash Samsher Rana informed that the association decided to withdraw its participation in the championship due to the April 25 earthquake.

Female players duo Nisha Rawal and Nima Gurung as well as coach Min Bahadur Thapa and President Rana himself were set to leave for Russia on May 12. The delegation had already booked plane tickets for Russia from New Delhi, India."We are not in a condition to participate in the championship as Nepal reels under the crisis from the earthquake. Participating in the championship is less important than staying in the country to show solidarity with those who suffered losses during the earthquake." said Rana, who was also set to cast vote during the Asian Taekwondo Federation and World Taekwondo Federation's general assembly.

Rana added that NTA had already informed WTF about its decision and the apex international body responded positively. He also informed that WTF has also promised to provide fund for the victims of earthquake.

Meanwhile, coach Thapa held contrasting view than that of President Rana. He said that participating in the championship was great opportunity for players since championship also opens doors for the Olympic.

The championship is organized every two years.
