Nepal clinches int'l school karate title

KATHMANDU, May 28: Nepal clinched the title of the 18th International High School Karate Kick Boxing Championship held in Kathamndu winning the highest 23 gold, 18 silver and 55 bronze medals.



India finished second with 14 gold, 21 silver and 23 bronze medals while Bangladesh secured third position claiming 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in the championship that concluded on Monday. [break]



Aakash Pal and Karma Tamang were declared the best junior men and women players respectively in kumite. Rajiv Ranjit and Sarita Shrestha bagged same award in senior man´s and woman´s section. All four players are from Nepal.



Nepal´s Srijana Sapkota was declared the emerging player, fair play title went to Himal Bal Kalyan High School of Pokhara and Bal Angur High School of Kathmandu won the best team award in march past.



Nepal´s Sailesh Rai won gold in men´s 55 kg kumite, Niranjan Khadka in 50 kg, Bikash Moktan in 45 kg and Sujan Shrestha in 40 kg. Similarly, Sujjad Hussain of Bangladesh in 35 kg, Suraj Pariyar of Nepal in 30 kg, Karan Patil of India in 15 kg took home gold medals.



Nepal dominated women´s kumite as well. Nepal´s Kabita Rajthala in women´s above 68 kg category, Sumitra Sulu in U-68 kg category, Manisha Mokta in 61 kg category, Samjhana Ghising in 55 kg category, Urmila DC in 45 kg category, Kusum Khadka in 40 kg category, Alisha Lama in 35 kg category, Karuna Shrestha in 30 kg category, Binita Maharjan in 25 kg category, Pushpa Lama in 20 kg category took home gold medals. All the gold winners are from Nepal.



Nepal´s Nirmala Tamang bagged gold in women´s singles kata.



Nepal also clean swept the gold medals in men´s and women´s kick boxing. Arbind Nishad in men´s 65 kg kick boxing, Mirsad Hussain in 55 kg, Laxman Basnet in 50 kg bagged gold each. In women´s kick boxing, Jasmin Shrestha in above 68 kg, Srijana Sapkota in 60 kg, Karma Tamang in 45 kg won gold medals.



Altogether 1,100 players from Nepal, India and Bangladesh had competed in the four-day long championship with 40 gold medals up for grabs. The event was organized by High School Central Committee of Nepal Shito Riyu Karate Do Association.
