I have heard lot about 1990 BS monster quake of 8.4 magnitudes but I haven’t had such type experience even though we shake little in 2069 BS 6.8 magnitude tremor. Now 82 years from 1990s I have had the experience of big earth quake. This 7.6 magnitude quake shocked and rattled our nation on Saturday noon of Baishak 12, took around 9000 lives, injured more than 2100 people, demolished more than half million house, millions of people become homeless and destroyed valuable heritage and infrastructures. In nutshell Nepal faced a somber disaster of the nature.

People who survived in such a shattering disaster has their own experience here I m going to share mine. Besides the usual routine I got up late in the morning because it was Saturday following a holiday in 11 Baishak Loktantra diwas. As usual I have finished all daily activities, have some breakfast and spent around half an hour doing exercises. I prepared lunch myself; my sister assisted me somewhat, we had our lunch together around 10:30 am. After that I had planned to go Newroad for buying some clothes for my sister, at that same time my close friend called me and we decided to go together, her house is 5 km away from my residence so it would take some time. that’s why I turn on television. Me and my sisters were sitting in the bed watching some program in TV, suddenly bed shacked  it wasn’t over that I was telling why are you moving to sister the whole room started shaking we move here and there, Tv turn off automatically. People outside the house are crying. Birds, dogs were creating bizarre voices. We were still shaking, even whole house was shaking, I felt it was a earth quake but I didn’t have idea what to do. I managed to move up to door some how, my sister was following me I said her to hold me tight so that she won’t feel much panic. People from upper floors were coming down shouting; some were saying Ram Ram, some saying Narayan Narayan. People from that house gathered near me I suggested them not to go outside because the open space is far away and things which were kept in the roof were falling hysterically. As soon as the shaking stop I felt I had won a great battle. I urged people to move to the safer place, to the open ground lies around 1 km from my residence. When we reached in the open space I saw a jamboree of people and no. of people were increasing.

I put my sister and other kids in a safe place. Women were crying because some of their child trapped inside the home and they couldn’t enter home because tremor is shaking frequently. I evacuate some children to the open space. After than I have bring necessary thing from my room.  I came to know my entire family member living nearby of my residence were safe except my grand father, he had some serious injury on his left leg.

All phone lines were extremely busy, I tried to call to my friends, relatives but there is no chance as the network was exhausting. Later on we were suffered not only from many aftershocks but also from terrible rumors. Some were saying another big earthquake is coming; two tigers from the Jaulakhel Zoo were escaped, the moon gone opposite and so on. We listened to the FM radio and came to know that many people lost their lives, many heritage places like Basantpur, Patan and Bhaktapur durbar squares were turned in to the rubbles, even a nine storey Dharahara tower vanished from the quake.

Talking about experience

We all had great but bad experience of our generation. The United nation unveils that there is loss of around $ 10 billion from that earthquake. It is huge loss to the developing country like Nepal which has only $ 19 billion GDP in total. Nature can demolish physical infrastructures but it can’t destroy our thinking, we Nepalese people had great history of bravery we can fight against any terrible situation even in this circumstance we will bounce back but we all Nepalese people should come together joining our hands to build the our nation. Although the loss is huge but we got positive lessons as well: lesson of unity, lesson of awareness and precautions.
