KATHMDNU, April 4: Mind can be cultivated or trained to cooperate and empathize in altruistic and compassionate manner as against the culture of competitive cooperation we have been seeing around us.

Matthieu Ricard, a French Buddhist monk who has lived in the Himalayan region for more than 40 years, learning and practicing meditation under respected spiritual masters, made such observation during an interaction session held at The Park Village Resorts in Kathmandu on Monday. In a two-hour session on "Neuroscience and Meditation," Ricard backed his arguments with scientific findings of various researches conducted in collaboration between long-term mediators and neuroscientists for studying the effects of meditation on human brain.

Matthieu said the world cannot wait for the evolutionary change, which has to occur at the genetic level, to rid human beings of their competitive instincts that is driving them to consume earth's resources at an unsustainable pace, putting the future of the planet in peril.

According to him, meditation can contribute in fostering a cultural change against "crazy over consumption" faster, creating a more secure future for the coming generations.

Around 100 people from diverse social and professional background attended the session and also took part in a brief Metta, or loving-kindness, meditation led by Ricard.

The session was organized by Ethics and Virtues Institute of Nepal in collaboration with Center for Psychological Health and Emotional Wellbeing.
