KATHMANDU, April 21: Secretariat meeting of the ruling Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has supported the action against Army Chief Rookmangud Katawal initiated by the government. Concluding that Katawal has become major hurdle in the process of bringing the army under civilian government’s control, the meeting asked the government to go ahead with action against him.

The meeting asked the prime minister to sack Katawal if the clarification furnished by Katawal does not satisfy the government.

The meeting also decided to strongly resist the pressure to come from some of the ruling parties and main opposition Nepali Congress. “We will ask Nepali Congress a last question—whether it believes in democratic principles and genuinely wants civilian control over army,” said a secretariat member CP Gajurel after the meeting.
