Major Madhesi parties announce candidates, constituencies

KATHMANDU, Oct 1: The major four Madhesi parties -- Upendra Yadav-led Madhesi People´s Right Forum-Nepal (MPRF-N), Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar-led MPRF-D, Rajendra Mahato-led Sadbhavana Party (SP) and Mahanth Thakur-led Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) -- have finalized the number of constituencies and candidates to be fielded in hill and the Tarai constituencies.



MPRF-N will field candidates in 136 constituencies. “We have fielded candidacies in the hill constituencies of Sindhupalchowk, Udaypur, Kaski, Surkhet, Nuwakot and Kathmandu Valley,” Ratneshwar Lal Kayastha, spokesperson of the party told Republica. He further added that their candidates will contest the poll from only 9 constituencies of the Kathmandu Valley. [break]



He said the party would make the list of candidates public on Wednesday.



SP Joint General Secretary Arjun Upreti said that their party will field candidates in around 200 constituencies. He added that the party would take a final decision regarding constituencies by late Tuesday night. “We have fielded candidacies at all 116 Tarai constituencies,” said Upreti. Earlier the party had announced to field candidacies in all 240 constituencies.



"Co-Chairman Laxman Lal Karn, General Secretary Manish Suman, and some other Central Committee members would contest the poll under Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system,” said an SP leader who did not want to be named.



Likewise, TMDP has decided to contest in over 120 constituencies. “Our candidates would contest from the hill constituencies of Kalikot, Jumla and the Kathmandu Valley,” said Govind Chaudhary, General Secretary of the party.



He further added that they have selected 23 women candidates under first past the post (FPTP) system.



Vice Chairman of MPRF-D Nasir Siddiqui has said that their party would field candidates in more than 200 constituencies. “We have not yet decided about the number of constituencies. However, we would reach to a conclusion tomorrow [Wednesday],” added Siddiqui. He further said that their party would announce the names of candidates before Thursday.



“Chairman Gachchhadar will contest the poll from the constituency number 3 of Sunsari, I from constituency number 5 of Rauthat, Jitendra Dev and Mrigendra Yadav from constituency number 3 and 4 of Saptari respectively, Birendra Nepali from constituency number 5 of Parsa and others would contest from their respective home districts” said Govind Chaudhary, party vice Chairman.



Chaudhary further added that another Vice Chairman Nasir Siddiqui, party secretary duo Ravindra Thakur and Chandeshwar Khatbe, among others, will contest under PR electoral system.
