KATHMANDU, July 31: Even as the government and the locals had reached an agreement on Thursday to allow disposal of garbage at the Sisdole Landfill Site in Okharpauwa, Nuwakot, the valley continues to bear the brunt of mounting garbage piles. On Friday, some locals prevented 21 garbage-laden trucks from passing through the area till 12 p.m. The police had to resort to force to let the trucks dispose of the garbage.

According to a staffer at the Garbage Management and Resource Mobilization Center (GMRMC), a group of six persons obstructed the trucks from entering the landfill site. The locals claimed that their demands were not represented by those who signed the agreement on Thursday. "We somehow managed to persuade the locals today. But if the same thing happens tomorrow, the problem of garbage disposal might persist.”

The agreement on Thursday was aimed at ending the long-standing garbage disposal problem and to expedite the construction of a central landfill site at Bancharedanda.
