The deceased has been identified as Hasan Karween Bekdas, who held a passport RL 2263424, according to Inspector Kabit Katwal, chief at Metropolitan Police Sector Office, Lainchaur. The cause of the death is yet to be ascertained, but police suspect an overdose of illegal drugs might have caused it. [break]
Hasan had booked a room, located on the fourth floor of Thamel Apartment on June 29 for one week and was living alone, Gauri Giri, the owner of the apartment said.
“Every day he used to wake up early and go for a morning walk but today he didn´t wake up till 8:30," Giri said. “We called the police as he didn´t open the door even after we knocked the door for about 30 minutes.”
When we opened the door using the master key, he was found leaning against the sofa and looked as if he was asleep, Inspector Katwal said, but he was already dead.
We are still investigating the case but the circumstances and the things that were recovered from his surrounding show he used drugs, Inspector Katwal said. The police have recovered numerous capsules scattered in the room, syringes used for injecting drugs and some pieces of hashish around his body.
According to Giri, the owner of the apartment, the deceased had stayed two days more and was about to leave on Monday. “He had booked the room for Rs 1000 per day and had been dillydallying on the payment,” he added. "I have also filed a complaint about the case at Metropolitan Police Range Office (MPRO), Hanuman Dhoka,” he informed.
The police have informed the Lebanese Embassy based in India about the death. Inspector Katwal said, “The embassy has yet to respond to them.”
As per the police, no valuable items were recovered from his possession other than his luggage and some clothes. The body has been sent to Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj for post-mortem.
