JHAPA, Oct 25: Though several schools in the district have begun teaching local languages in the school curriculum, textbooks for the subject have not been made available to students yet.

According to Dwarika Subedi, principal of Ekta Primary School, teachers as well as students have been facing difficulties due to lack of textbooks.

Santhal and Rajbanshi language courses were initiated at National Ekta Primary School, which has 176 students. After the education faculty decided to start mother tongue language training at the primary level, the donors had chosen National Ekta Primary School. However, lack of textbooks has played spoilsport. Similar is the plight of nine other schools in the district.

Rajbanshi, Santhal, Limbu, Meche and Sadari language classes are being conducted at schools in Jhapa. But, classes for Sadari and Meche language are not being conducted for lack of textbooks.

The teachers have been following the guidelines they received at seminars to teach local languages. According to them, it is necessary to teach children in their mother tongues. On the other hand, students from Baahun, Chhetri and Newar community are facing difficulties learning other languages.
